Commenting the prospects for the government after tension between the partners backing the government, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mariya Gabriel said there have been two key words on which she has insisted from the very beginning: dialogue and reason. She said that Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov and herself show “more and more that we work perfectly together in a team”.
She said that “when you want to have a nationally responsible agenda and you want decisions made as a result of debate, transparency, based on clear rules and principles, there is no reason to not have a stable government and continue with your work”.
Gabriel was asked to comment a declaration with seven items which Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria (CC-DB) put out Friday with conditions that they want fulfilled in order to keep going the government they put together with GERB-UDF. She said that it was not addressed to her but to the members of Parliament of GERB-UDF and that she insists to keep the executive – part of which she is – and legislative power branches separate, and to bear her own responsibility in the executive.
Gabriel was put forward as Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister by her GERB party in the government of Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov, who was nominated by CC-DB. It was part of a deal between GERB-UDF and CC-DB – the first and second largest parties in the Bulgarian Parliament – which also envisages that after nine months Gabriel will take over from Denkov as Prime Minister and he will become Deputy Prime Minister.
