A Cougar helicopter crew from Krumovo Air Base carried out a rescue operation of a pregnant tourist in Pirin Mountain on Saturday, the Defence Ministry said in a press release. A team of 16 mountain rescuers were part of the operation; they managed to get to the woman despite the difficult terrain under Mount Vihren and to transport her to a location where the helicopter could pick her up, BTA learned from Atanas Ukov of the Mountain Rescue Service.
The tourist, who was bleeding heavily, was transported to Bansko where she received emergency medical care.
The air rescue operation was carried out at the order of the Chief of Defence, Admiral Emil Evtimov, following a request by the General Directorate for Fire Safety and Population Protection.
