An exhibition on Japan’s ukiyo-e prints in Bulgarian collections is being prepared by the National Art Gallery and the Japanese Embassy in Bulgaria. The exhibition will be on at Sofia’s Kvardat 500 from October 17 to January 21, 2024, the National Art Gallery said. Zlatka Dimitrova is curator of the exhibition.

The gallery’s team said that the exhibition is unique in scale and shows for the first time prints from the collections of the National Archaeological Institute with Museum, the art galleries in Sliven and Silistra, and the National Art Gallery. On the occasion of the 190th anniversary of the most popular series of Japanese ukiyo-e prints – Fifty-three Stations on the Tokaido by Utagawa Hiroshige, the prints on that topic will be a main focus of the exhibition.

The idea for the exhibition was born after a thorough research on the collections of Japanese prints in Bulgaria and the dating and precise description of the works by Japanese specialist Prof. Jun’ichi Okubo within a research project of Assistant Professor Stella Zhivkova from the St Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia.

The exhibition is organized in a festival format and includes additional events, the main being a guest presentation of prints from the National Art Academy’s collection at the Boris Denev Art Gallery in Veliko Tarnovo. These events are oriented at educational programmes and include lectures, specialized tours and workshops for children and young people.
